This book is Part 1 of "The Necromancer's Tale" series. In this fantasy novel of policemen, mercenaries, and necromancers, a Chief Constable becomes embroiled in the political and religious upheaval in his city when he seeks aid from a wandering spellcaster. Across the continent, a band of sword-slinging mercenaries cut a bloody swathe though the countryside, seeking their fortune at their own peril...

This is one of my favorite fantasy adventure novels. The story was unlike any I have read before. For comparison sake, some of my favorite authors are Guy Gavriel Kay, Gene Wolfe and Neil Gaiman. If anything, it reminds me of Kay's work, in that Ghoul explores finely-drawn characters, battles, consequences of personal wars and the inner-workings of government. The sprawling city of Merund is governed by a check and balance type system between the Magistrate, the University of Wizardry and the Church of Delar. The setting is in a world not our own, but I would say it's like if America's late nineteenth century had magic. In Part I, we meet Alois Gustav, a Chief Constable, who is forced to rethink his world view after he suffers a personal tragedy and forms a friendship with someone he previously had only considered arresting. Next we meet the Magistrate and his assistant Krupp and we learn that during this period in Merund, the Magistrate is the branch with most of the power. They fall in with the wizard Falkenhayn, who's become alarmed by the clear (but only to him) presence of a Necromancer in Merund. In Part II, we switch gears entirely for the reunion of two army buddies, Rodulphus and Tiberius, in the desert city of Selan. After they acquire the most unusual and disturbing companion, they embark on a business endeavor.
I love that the characters are so realistic. I especially liked how different characters responded when their beliefs were questioned (which I would say is a theme in this book). Also, the villain is terrifying but delightful in his evilness. (Whether there is a concrete definition of "evil" is another theme the book explores.)
After I started Part II, I could barely put the book down, even the second time I read it. I love the characters and I'm looking forward to the sequel which promises to address the Church of Delar and hopefully will expand on some characters' histories.

Ghoul The Necromancer Tale Volume 1 Ralph McGeary 9781477589137 Books Reviews
I loved this book. There are original and hilarious characters, as well as ideas about life, politics, and religion. I would recommend this for sci-fi and fantasy fans who enjoy witty, intellectual conversation.
McGeary is an emerging fantasy author who has shown his talents with his debut novel, Ghoul. He writes with a humorous, colloquial style that easily pulls us into the world, making this a fast, but complex read. Dealing with topics of necromancy, magic, religion and civic duty, McGeary makes us question our moral and ethical standards while still entranced in an action-packed adventure. Looking forward to seeing more from this author!
The book was good from start to finish. At first I didn't know how everything was going to tie together and it did nicely at the end. I enjoyed all of the characters and loved the fantasy elements in the book.
I liked how Ralph tied religion into the book with the magic. I don't know read a lot of fantasy novels, but never seen it done like this, brought a whole new angle towards the end of the book. Can't wait for the sequel, I will be buying it for sure.
An inventive story by a first-time novelist. There's adventure, necromancy, drama, and lots of humor! This novel is the first of a two-part series.
Excellent book!
This first novel was great from the start. It pulled me in and kept me reading in one sitting. It has action, mystery, comedy, and horror. Every character had their moments that made me laugh and cry. It also has a pretty amazing plot twist.
Can't wait for the sequel! Ralph McGeary is definitely an author I will surely follow.
This is a truly unique magic adventure novel. It's also a lot of fun to read. The reason it doesn't get the full 5-stars is because I need to read the second book in the series first. The Ghoul leaves a lot of unanswered questions at the end. I've just purchased the second book, Hail Tiberia, and I plan on enjoying it as much as the first book (Ghoul).
